Entries were judged by
SND Quick Course speakers at Michigan State University on
Feb. 25.
Steve Dorsey is the design and graphics director
at the Detroit Free Press and a part-time design
consultant. He is a member of the Knight Ridder Visual
Journalism task force and is a popular speaker at
conferences and workshops. He has been a member of the SND
competition committee for seven years and was the contest
coordinator for the 21st edition (publishing in fall 2000).
Before Detroit, Steve spent time at the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader and the York (Pa.) Daily Record. He started newspapering
during high school at The Norwich (N.Y.) Evening Sun, where he did
everything—including delivering papers and emptying
the trash.
Joseph Kieta is presentation/visuals editor of the
(Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) Times Leader, where he is responsible for the
newspaper's visual journalism, both design and photo. On
Jan. 1 he and Deborah Withey, Knight Ridder's design
consultant, launched a total redesign of the newspaper.
Previously he was presentation editor of The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, Calif.,
where he oversaw a redesign of that newspaper on the 50-inch
web. Prior to joining Knight Ridder, Kieta redesigned the
Daily
Telegram in
Adrian, Mich.
Rodrigo Sanchez is the art director of El
Mundo in Madrid, Spain. During his eight years at the paper,
he's designed several Sunday supplements like "Magazine" and
"La Revista," the weekly "Metropoli," the teen supplement
"La Luna" and the fashion and style supplement "M." Together
with Carmelo Caderot, design director at El Mundo, he's been
taking this newspaper and Spanish editorial design to the
high levels of world recognition. He's won the top awards
given by the Society of Publication Designers, Type
Directors Club and SND.
Randy Stano is the Knight Chair Professor and
Associate Director of the Center for the Advancement of
Modern Media at the School of Communication for the
University of Miami. He is the current SND Quick Course
Committee chair and a past-president of SND. He was the
director of editorial art and design at The Miami
Herald, and
in 1993, The
Herald won
the Pulitzer Prize gold medal and SND Best of Show honors
for its coverage of Hurricane Andrew. Stano has been the
graphics art director of The Democrat and
Chronicle
(Rocherster, N.Y.). A design consultant, he recently
redesigned the Prague Post and is now working with the staff of
the Milwaukee Journal
Sentinel on
a redesign.
Annette Vazquez has been the sports designer
at the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger since she joined the paper last
month. Before that she was a news designer at the
San Jose
Mercury News where she designed A1, metro and
special projects. She has also worked at the Asbury Park
Press in
New Jersey and The Detroit News. In 1995 she received an
SND student travel grant to attend the Barcelona convention.
She has won several SND awards in both sports and news
categories. She's a 1996 graduate of Michigan State
University's School of Journalism. GO SPARTANS!
